Clean up needed on laptop

I recently tried to copy a family dvd on my laptop using Roxio and received an error message saying there was not enough space on my hard drive.

I am using Vista with 1 gb RAM i believe, which i was told on here previously is the bare minimum for running Vista effectively, really need some more memory.

I'm not sure if when i've used Roxio previously it has stored all the copies i have done.

My laptop at present is showing

Available space 0%
1.26 gb of 64.4gb available

How can i go about a good clear out to free up some space.

I've googled free up space and all it points to is software to buy

I'm really just loooking for a spring clean of Windows

Any help appreciated

Thanks

windirstat and ccleaner are free - there are many threads on the subject, if you have a d: partition, you could move some data there.

Use CCleaner. In CCleaner click on Tools, System Restore and delete the System Restore points.

Download, install and run Ccleaner straight out of the box. Ccleaner should delete all temporary files created by Roxio.

When you have done this, please post the Total size and Free space on Drive C and Drive D (if you have one) These are listed in My Computer.

We can advise you further from there.

Just delete some of the other DVDs you've already copied to make space.

Also, to prevent write errors when copying the DVD to the computer.

Use the virtual memory. Got to Control Panel - System - Advanced System Settings - Advanced Tab - Performance - Settings Button - Advanced - Virtual Memory - Change Button - Select Custom Size. Make it at least 5Gb. Apply and Re-start your computer.

This allows the DVD to copy to the hard drive directly and not get held in the 1Gb of RAM which does not offer enough storage space.

This is a bad move as the Original post says:
Available space 0% 1.26 gb of 64.4gb available
The OP is trying to gain some hard disk space, not improve performance. The single best move to improve performance is to add more RAM. By default, Windows will automatically adjust the virtual memory to suit, no need for adjustment.

the problem with vista being allowed to manage the pagefile is that it is a bit overzealous doing it - ever wondered why vista seems to be churning the hdd way more than XP ever did? it's management of the pagefile is a major contributor to this effect. Better on vista to set the pagefile to a custom size, 1.5 to 2 times the installed ram (or a 2GB min if only 1GB RAM installed) is a good size and less hard disk mashing :)
