Help with Tenga-virus

Hello all,

I've got some virus-problems on my PC (on which I run Windows Vista), and I would be really grateful for any advice.

I discovered a while back when I did a virus-scan that I have loads (over 200) of infected files on my computer. The virus is called Tenga, and all of the infected files are .tmp-files. Most of the files it's attached to seem to be files associated with older programmes on my computer (however I'm pretty sure the virus attached itself to those files at a later point, because it hadn't been picked up previously), that I've had for ages. But I remember when I did the same scan a while back the virus was also attached to lots of .exe-files. However the scan did now show any such results this time? *confused*

I am not very good with computers, techie-wise, altho I use the computer everyday for uni work/computer art/internet/etc. Normally one of my friends helps me with this kind of stuff, but we now live in different countries, so he hasn't got access to my computer. He googled information about the Tenga-virus and said that it seems unsafe to remove the virus via the AV-software (Avast) because the removal of it might lead to important files being lost, and that it seems to be a complicated process. (I googled it too, but didn't understand much of the information I found because I'm so unfamiliar with this area). He said he couldn't help much by not being here, and that maybe I knew someone here who could help (none of my friends knows about this kind of stuff tho) or perhaps I could take it into a computer repair shop.

I'm feeling quite uneasy taking my computer into a computer repair shop tho. I know I'm probably being silly, but I feel uneasy at the thought of all my private stuff (photos, files etc) being in the hand of a complete stranger. It's not like I've got any dodgy stuff on my computer *haha*, but it still makes me uneasy, I mean, my computer is like a diary to me in some ways. Also, there is probably still a risk of everything being lost if it's hard for them to fix the problem, I guess?

I do backups quite regularly (just burn my important files onto DVDs), but I guess I have now backed up the virus too for god knows how long.. Will it spread again if I put old backups into a "clean" PC? And if so, how would I be able to get a "clean" backup?
I'm also wondering if there's a way of knowing when the computer was infected? I'm afraid that when I found the virus I hadn't done a virus-scan for quite a while *shame*.. and I don't know which of my backup DVDs might be clean and which ones might be infected.

The virus doesn't seem to do any visible harm to my computer at the moment, it seems to be running like normal. Like I said, I've had the virus for a while as well (since I've been unsure about how to remove it.. so I've just procrastinated dealing with it..). Does anyone know what this virus does? I've read it's a pretty bad virus, but not sure why that is.

I would be grateful for any advice and information regarding this virus, and what my options are for getting it removed. If this is something I could do myself I would be very pleased, but like I said, I'm not very used to this area, and when googling most of the information have been a bit too complicated for me.

Also, while I'm writing, how can I make sure my AV-software is picking up on all viruses and spyware on my computer? Should I install more AV-softwares? Like I said earlier, I have a free version of Avast at the moment.

Many thanks,

if avast picked them up, it should have cleaned it up

If it's infected, you don't really have a choice, other than to let the antivirus software do it's stuff.

You could install this in addition to avast http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

ccleaner might help in deleting tmp file/ie history

run ccleaner first ( also available from filehippo ) then as closed suggests, download (from his link), install, update and run a quick scan with mbam. Allow it to delete all it finds and post the log file up on here for further advice...

After clearing temp files, try this online anti-virus scan.

You will need to to right-click on the Internet Explorer icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

    Go here: http://www.eset.co.uk/Antivirus-Utilities/Online-Scanner

    • Click on Scan now.
    • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: START
    • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
    • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
    • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
      • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
      • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
      • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
    • Now click on: START
    • The virus signature database will begin to download.
    • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
    • When completed make sure you first copy the logfile located at:
    C:\Program Files\ESET\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
    • Copy and paste that log here.
