Finding the right Utilities company - New home owner!

I will be a new home owner in the next couple of weeks and I am trying to find out which is the best company to go with, however all of the comparison sites assume that you have already got a an account with someone?
Does anyone know how I can find a good company to go with, without having any prior knowledge of how much bills will be and what tariff I am on??
Thanks in advance!

As soon as you move into the property you will have an account with someone, you need to find out the supplier and sign up with them, then you are free to switch away to another provider of your choice but you will need to sign up to whatever company is supplying the property first. Dont let them talk you into going onto any special tariffs until you have done your own comparisons as they may have exit fees (and not be the cheapest)Missing Tesco R&R since Feb '07 :A & now a "Tesco veteran" apparently!0

Welcome to the forum.
Initially you will have no choice but to have the company supplying gas/electricity; however you can immediately set in motion a switch to another company.
You will need to estimate your annual consumption to find the cheapest company for your property.
If you post information on here, someone will help you estimate. We need to know.
Heating - gas or electric or other?
Type/size of property - 1 bed flat or 8 bed mansion.
Your 'lifestyle' e.g. out at work all day.
There is no 'best' company. Every company has satisfied and dissatisfied customers.
All the cheaper tariffs are on-line0 -

Use a comparison website. I recommend uSwitch, TheEnergyshop and your choice to make 3. They should all closely agree.
Within quite a wide range of annual consumption the suppliers will be ranked in the correct headline cost order (subject to "gotchas" which is something else). Choose any standard tariff as your current tariff. 16,500kWhrs gas and 3,300kWhrs per year electric are considered "average" for a gas heated house and will produce a reasonably accurate % comparison.
Do not compare on monthly direct debit.0
