Transfer DH's balance to my credit card?

Hello. We're paying off two credit cards at the moment but want to move both balances to one 0% card. This is purely to cut down on admin - there isn't a problem with him getting his own card! Is it possible to transfer my OH's balance to my card or does he have to apply for his own?

You can usually do a transfer in one name to a card in another, providing they are 2 different card providers (eg you cannot transfer from one barclaycard to another barclaycard, or from say virgin to amazon).

When you do the transfer its generally advised to do online as they don't ask the name of the card that is being paid off, sometimes if you do it by phone they will ask the account holders name of the other account and then some customer services bods say no, others say yes.

Oh and obviously you become legally responsible for repaying his debt once its in your name - but I'm presume you know that already.

Should be no problem, provided that both cards are not from the same provider. Best not to volunteer the details of what you're doing in case some call centre person decides it's against some rule or other. Use internet banking if you can.

I'm sure you're madly in love now but if it all goes wrong later you will still owe the money. :)

  • Thanks for that! Oh, we're terribly sensible and this is joint debt - we have two joint credit cards and have been spending on both. Married with kids and a mortgage so this is the technical 'small stuff' tbh.
