Excuses for Taking a Day Off ...

I know that what I am asking is not ethical, but I need to take a day off tomorrow. I am really stressed out, just need to take a day to get on top of things.

Problem is I am always poorly (I have mental health problems), and want a non medical reason to give as to why I am not going in. Just can't think of one.

Any suggestions very welcome x

  • you ve been broken it ot, they wouldnt expect you to go in then..

Personally i wouldnt lie i would just sit down and have a chat with your boss !!!

If they are aware you have mental problems they have to accomdate for that.

    Well i think ......

Not good to take odd days off, it looks bad. Far better to take at least a week, possibly 2, twice per year sick. My GP is sympathetic and will give sick notes if you ask him. You can then book odd days off as holidays
  • Why don't you just say you are not feeling well?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Personally I would just be honest. If you have too many odd days off rumours will star spreading and you'll get a bad reputation. If you tell them the truth then they know there's a genuine reason you're off and will be more accomodating.

Thanks guys, I know you are all trying to be helpful, but I really can't take a sick day as such, I have had too many already.

Should have explained, I am at uni, but unlike many courses, my tutors do check whether you attend!

Too many sick days will have an impact on my continuing on the course next year, whereas a day off for another reason will not even be noted.

The one positive is that I am keeping up with all the work, and getting good marks. Just if I don't have days like tomorrow every so often, then that is when I will start falling behind.

omg - loving that advice - but I would go crazy if I had a whole week off (not that I am not already!) x

  • Are the tutors not sympathetic to your mental health problems?

you will not be the only one who will be in the same situation

talk to the tutors, they would much rather know the reason why, then having to make their own conclusions about why you are not in lectures

they can not discriminate against you because of your mental health problems

They are sympathetic to a point, but I don't think that they have much experience in this area, and the Mental Health support people aren't up to much good either!

However, you have convinced me, I will tell the truth. What's the worst they can do?!

Big thank you to all of you - always good to come here and get some genuine understanding x

  • Ohhhh counsellors at university. :D

Yes, they do like to talk alot don't they.

When I was at university in the early 90's thankfully they didn't worry too much about attendance. I worked at the local supermarket full time and just went into university once a week to pick up any assignments. Came out with a 2/2 in the end :) And the May ball was on a weeknight, the night before one of my 9.30am exams, got 78% for that one :)

Personally my annoyance with university was the amount of faffing and piddling about that went on. The place was just so dreamy and unfocused, certainly not a centre of excellence that I believed I was entering in the 1st year. That was my biggest disappointment, and mainly the reason why I didn't really participate in group things. After university and when working in a proper job, we had those same dreamy graduates coming to do a job in the real world and they were just so totally useless. And I really do mean useless, like figuring out how to use a fax machine or how to talk to someone on the telephone.

As long as your grades are good then they'll mostly let you do what you want ;)
