Not a fan of openoffice myself but for the price you can't really go wrong, can you?

Quite like pre-2007 versions of Excel.

Where the OpenOffice word processor was fairly comparable to MS Word, the spreadsheet package has always been a bit clunkier than Excel, though perfectly adequate for the average home user.

If you're used to the ribbon interface of MSO 2007 or 2010, though, it feels positively archaic.

I recently switched from Open Office to Libre Office and found it to be a bit more up to date with regard to opening up documents in the latest MS Word formats.

The 2 are basically the same but I gather more development work has taken place on Libre Office in recent times and from what I have seen with my limited usage I would tend to agree.

You can set it so that all documents are saved in MS Word form i.e .doc and .xls by default.
