Vietnamese River Cobbler.

I saw this in the supermarket recently and it looked nice but I didn't buy it as I'm a bit funny about fish, I can't eat if it has a fishy, cod liver oily taste which a lot of fresh fish do seem to have IMO. Has anyone tried it, can you tell me what it's like please?

River cobbler is lovely! It is quite a meaty white fish. The smoked version is a bit like smoked haddock, but meatier.

  • It's not very strong imo it's fine for fish pie or chowder but it didn't taste stong enough to have on it's own.

I cant help with the smoked version but I often buy river cobbler instead of other white fish. I agree with those who say its meaty and its also considerably cheaper than other fish :D

  • thanks everyone that's what I was hoping as it's about half the price of the haddock or hake I usually buy. I will pick some up hopefully tomorrow :)

I tried this for the first time about 2 years ago and it was really nice. I'm really funny about food so googled it at the time and there was a lot of negative info about the way it was farmed and the pollution/toxin side of it concerned me enough to never buy it again. However, I've just googled it again and the main consensus seems to be that the negative hype around it was unfounded. My OH used to hate fish mainly for the same reasons you're funny about it and it was a resounding thumbs up from him.

There's been a debate about it on Jamie Olivers forum and Watchdog sent ONE fish to a lab and found no traces of toxins....the scientist in me is not convinced on findings based on one fish though. That said, I choose not to eat farmed fish :o I don't know if you can get smoked pollock but that's what I buy white fish (never noticed a smoked version before) and OH likes that and it's a similar price.

  • How coincidental!

I just bought some for OH to make fish pie whilst I'm away, I'd come on here to see if there are threads - lo and behold, on the second page!!

I was a little dubious, but for £2 each for a fillet of plain and a fillet of "smoked" I thought it was worth a go. Seems I've stumbled onto a good thing!

Thanks all, will report back with OHs verdict next week.

I agree with comments on here, it certainly gets us eating more fish as a family as I cant afford the price of haddock or cod too much. Makes great fish pie!

I was put off by the negative publicity - I really should get over it and try this if you all reckon its ok

Yuk, it's horrible in my opinion :( I made a thai fish curry with it back when I used to eat fish and had to pick out all the fish as it was so nasty, repulsive, horrible texture

Another vote for VRC. Taste was a bit, well, just "fishy", but then what do you expect? The texture was very good, though. I tried it in a fish pie and it was excellent.

I also saw all the negative comments, but thought, if was really THAT bad, no supermarket in their right mind would stock it. I suffered no ill effects whatso... <thud>

I really ought to get an unsmoked fillet and just poach it in some milk. With a dollop of mash and a dollop of mushy peas, it's my healthy alternative to fish 'n' chips.

Apparently, we are all just going to have to get used to eating more strange river fish, if the predictions are correct that the Japanese will pull the last edible pelagic fish from the ocean sometime in 2025.
