iPhone restored instead of updating!

Hi, when I plugged my iPhone 4 into the laptop on Saturday I wanted to put some music on, it asked to update to ios5, then said there was a problem and restored the phone....initially I lost everything.
Now, my iPhone is on ios5, my iPad has all my music on, but the iPhone has none, it keeps saying error when I try to download my music.
All my photos in camera roll have vanished from both devices (sob), and my books in my kindle on my iPad are there, but kindle on my iPhone says you have no books stored in the cloud ( I know I do!).
I'm gutted.
What do I do!?
I've googled it but nothing seems to help.
Can anyone very clever help with this?? Please? I'm lost!

if the iPhone backed up before it restored itself you should be able to restore it again but when it asks choose 'Restore from backup' instead as 'set up as new' from there it should be as it was before.

fingers crossed though when I updated to iOS5 last year it lost all my camera roll too, and no matter what I tried I couldn't get them back then last week I updated to 5.1 and they all came back, that was weird.

The iOS update was a bit weird for most people. It wiped it to scratch, didn't do a restore for most like it should've done.

covers lots of the problems there has been with it. I am still to put all of my music back on and sort it and cover art it. Gave up in the end, because my itouch was !!!!y with the album art after that update.
