Landlord reference problem

Hi there,
I am in a bit of a pickle. Basically, the last private place I rented, I had major problems with my flatmate, he was a pig, and I didn't know when I moved in. I had however struck u[ a reasonable relationship with the landlord and had helped him try to deal with the other tenant.
When we had to move out, I had let the landlord know the state of the place and had done what I could to maintain it. I helped him get the last couple of months rent from my former friend, who I now don't talk to because of the situation, and he had maintained that he knew what the score was. As a result, he had promised me he would give me a reference if I needed one. I left the flat a month before the other tenant and I totally cleaned my room and anything that I could (my room was still in good condition.
So naturally I put this down on the reference form. When I asked if that was ok, he told me to get stuffed basically and that if there was a blacklist he would put us both on it.
If I had known this was the case, I would not have put his name down, and now I am facing the prospects of moving yet again.
Can anyone give any advice on this please?
Kind regards
Jonny

I know exactly how you are feeling - calm down!
I am a young woman who moved into a mans house-he is a right pig- and I didnt knwo either. i was in such desperate need of somewhere to stay and the room was lovely.Result is, this is my second and last month. The all bills included verbal agreement has been doubled + +
Anyway, he and this other girl are constantly !!!!!ing about me (that im antisocial, keep myself to myself, always quiet and at work) and he is making my life hell.
These days the law is more on the tennants side other than the landlord.
Do you have anyone else's name you could put down as a refernece so that this man doesn't get involved at all?
It maybe worth explaining this to the furute landlord or person off whom you want to rent off.
It's not a nice world-people will take advantage.Shame you didnt knwo this earlier not too make all the effort you had!

The problem is that I have already put his name down, I have tried telling the reference people that he has moved on, but they want me to go through the letting agency now, and that won't work as they will just give his details.
I know he is not legally allowed to give a bad reference, but if I don't get one then my credit check fails. it is really annoying, I could have put a number of people down, but it is too late now.0 -
You said it yourself..He can't do that. If he does deny it and complaint!
Can't you speak to somone else in this agency and just act dumb and kindof say ''look I gave you somone else's details by mistake im such a donut-you ll go knocking on some randoms door!'' I knwo it sounds silly but they can't really say anything to that can they..
What is his problem anyway I thought he knew that you tried your best and the person to blame was the other bloke? We’re separate, two ghosts in one mirror, no nearer

The problem is that the new landlord has gone through an agency- fine, but the agency goes through a reference check company, and it is an electronic thing that does a credit check for you.
So they have checked via the electoral role, so I don't think I have a choice.0
