Visa Debit Card Protection / Faulty TV

Hi all,

Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place.

I purchased a swanky 52" Samsung LCD TV in July 2009. The TV has been great up until very recently, when the TV developed a fault whereby a vertical blue line has appeared in the middle of the screen, running from top to bottom.

My first reaction was to contact the company who sold me the item and advise them that the TV has developed a fault in a relatively short period of time. However, when I contacted them they advised that the company who I purchased the TV off had gone bust and they have acquired the name.

I purchased the TV using my Visa Debit Card with my Santander account.

I suppose there is nothing I can do?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    I would get this put in writing and sent via e-mail to their HO, then you have written proof of when and how you did contact them...

    Do you have any insurance that may cover this?

    If not sure give your card issuers a quick call they may be able to help.

    But I suspect you would struggle with a claim based on what you have said.

    Did it come with any sort of manufacturer's guarantee? Have you tried contacting samsung at all?

    In terms of what you were told on the phone - do you have a copy of the invoice at the time? does it have a company name and a company registration number?
    When you look up the company name now is there anything to suggest its not the same company? It might be worth investigating their claim that they are a different company who acquired the name.

    There's some info about Visa Chargeback here. I don't think it's really designed to cover an item that develops a fault two and a half years after it was purchased.

    As the company you purchased the TV from has gone bust Santander probably wouldn't be able to perform a chargeback against them anyway.

    And, unfortunately, Samsung TV warranties only seem to last twelve months. :(

    If the company has gone bust then there is no hope of a cashback.

    Cashback is a transaction reversal. If it can not be reversed all the way back to the merchant then it can't happen.

    I think you're stuffed.

    Even if it had been a credit card I think you'd struggle to get a S75 refund, let alone a chargeback on a debit card.

    Too long gone.

    complain to samsung, they may offer 50% repair.
    Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

    I'm pretty sure chargebacks have a 120 day limit anyway, so even if the company wasn't bankrupt the protection from the debit card is long gone. The best I can suggest is to always use a credit card for large purchases.

    You purchased this television almost 3 years ago.

    Your sole recourse is the manufacturers gurantee, if it is still good after such a long period.

    What possible grounds exist for a chargeback or refund in respect of a minor fault which developed after almost 3 years? Just go and get the TV repaired.
