Help with VPN

I travel a reasonable amount (I'm in San Francisco at the moment) and to watch the BBC iPlayer I have been using the VPN facility of my router. I just swapped out the router to a different one that doesn't have built in VPN.
No problems I thought, set up an incoming connection on my (Windows 7) computer at home, port forward and set up the VPN Client on my MacBook.
It doesn't really work and I don't quite know what to do. The Macbook does connect and gets an internal (192.x.x.x) IP address and I can access local resources BUT my external IP is still the original (i.e. outside of the UK). When I used to connect to the router's VPN my external IP was that of the router (i.e. a UK ip address).
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
