Which tells me that Access 2007 is not compatible. Friend is using MS Office XP Professional, of which Access is a component. So now somewhat confused! No free lunch, and no free laptop

Looks like you're right. I wasn't sure what version Office XP was so Wiki'd it:Which tells me that Access 2007 is not compatible. Friend is using MS Office XP Professional, of which Access is a component. So now somewhat confused!
"Microsoft Office XP is an office suite created and distributed by Microsoft for Windows operating system. Released on March 5, 2001, it is the successor to Office 2000 and the predecessor to Office 2003, and was known as Office 10 in the early stages of its development cycle. Despite the "XP" branding, Office XP does not require Windows XP or higher; rather, "XP" was a marketing term for its era."
Ie, it's Office 2002 which is not compatible according to MS's website - all versions after 2003 are.
Now, what I don't know is if the compatibility stuff refers to standard Windows 7 or the XP emulator thingy in Windows 7 Professional - perhaps someone else can advise.Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0
