Quick guide to parking regulations

Options
I don't pay for parking very often, but occasionally do.

Just wondered if there's a handy guide to spotting which parking charges are and are not enforceable?

I park in Guildford sometimes and the car parks seem to say 'Guildford council', so I guess that means the charges are enforceable?

OTOH, I parked in Whipps Cross Hospital on the weekend and it seemed to be run by a private company. In that case is clamping the only thing to worry about? Check if there's something on the signs about clamping?

I (and I suspect quite a few others on here) do not condone dodging legitimate parking fees on the grounds that the private companies run the car parks. I think you may have misunderstood the nature of this forum.

What we object to on here are the disproportionate 'fines' handed out by private companies, which legally they are not entitled to.

Here is your handy guide -
Private car parks = unenforceable but watch out for clamping signs.
Council car parks = enforceable but always appeal.

Agreed. I haven't paid for parking for over five years now, quite legitimately, simply by not using pay and display car parks. I only shop at retail parks/supermarkets with free parking, or in a local town centre that has a Tesco within walking distance.
The only exception is the hospital. I live in England and a proportion of the stupid amounts of tax I have to pay goes towards subsidising free hospital parking in other parts of the UK, so on the odd occasion I have to go there I don't pay and am rewarded with an invoice which of course I ignore.

I'm with the others on this. Council you pay as they have a legal fast track system of enforcement, though you should always appeal if the PCN is unfair or unjustified as there IS a truly independent appeal system,

Private car parks, pay your dues; but NEVER pay one of their FAKE tickets, and NEVER waste time or trouble battering your head against their totally sham "appeal" system. Just ignore them completely when they send you a begging letter.

    Well not particularly.

I did buy a ticket in the hospital car park, but it was for shorter than the time I was planning to stay - I got there at 5:40pm and the visiting hours ended at 8pm, I bought a 2 hour ticket, otherwise it would have cost me another £2.50 for the extra 20 minutes, which is absurd really.

My local hospital is next to a Tesco, and we always just park there, but I wasn't particularly familiar with this one.

I go most places by bicycle, so I don't have to pay a penny (have saved a few £££ at expensive Forestry Commission sites by parking nearby and cycling in, too).
