Cake gone wrong

Hi,
I ordered a birthday cake for my toddler son;s party. I ordered a vanilia sponge with buttercream and Jam filling.
The cake arrived, a major part of the decoration was a bit bent, but I didnt moan about this. Upon cutting the cake I noticed it was a bit wet looking, and when I bit into it, it had a wet texture, it wasnt major soggy, just a weird and wet, then it was sweet beyond belief, I realise cakes are sweet especially when iced but this was sweet to the point that it made mine and my guests mouth sore, as a result my £70 cake was left practically untouched due to the strangness of it, parents did not want to give their kids a cake with that amount of sugar as it really was unbearably sweet even after removing the icing
Although not a cake decorator I make cakes all the time, and I instantly knew that either the cake was frozen and then defrosted OR it was drenched in Syrup. I asked the maker (please bear in mind she has a website and runs this as a business and not some mates mum who does as a hobby) if she had did either, she said yes she added syrup to keep the cake moist and sweet and most of her clients like it?!?!
A standard worldwide recipe for a vanila sponge is simply eggs, flour, sugar butter, and vanilla extract should you wish. I have cake books coming out my ears and I have never seen one where syrup is added, unless a syrup sponge cake. I was so annoyed as this is not what you would expect and had i known I would have asked her not to add this, there is nothing on her site refering to this variation on a sponge cake, and neither can one assue that becasue your currrent clients like this variation, all will.
I have sent a polite letter voicing my disapointment, and I am not expecting a refund as naturally she put time into the cake, but would some partial payment be reasonable considering the cake is now just sat in the living room hardly eaten

Send the cake back and get your money back so that you can buy another one to replace it.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

I'd be cross too.
Did you sample any cakes from the supplier before you committed £70? Or did you assume that a cake is a cake is a cake (not unreasonable) and make your choice based on size, aesthetics and price?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

thanks folks.
my sons bithday party has come and gone, I could give her back the cake but the damage is already done so to speak, I will not be laying on another party for those pesky 3- 4 year olds
I didnt ask for samples,as I would have thought a sponge cake is a sponge cake, I totally understand that everyoone definition of what tastes nice is diefferent and there is no way if it was a case of us not just liking it I would be on here posting as I know I would get flammed but this is a variation of a pretty standard reciepe to which I was not expecting in the slightest, the cakes on her site looked very professional, there was nothing that would make me think "hmmmm this looks dodgy" the price was not sooo cheap that would make me wonder why but equally it was cheaper than the local (and not so local) cake shops.
Sad part is if she didnt ruin it with all this syrup nonsense it would actually taste nice, but the syrup totally messed it up, the icing was less sweet than the cake! can you imagine, there is sugar in the sponge, then ther is Jam so sugar, then buttercream, more sugar, then adding syrup?!?! You can get an idea of how sweet this thing is, and then I was expected to give it to kids :eek:0 -
I made some Betty Crocker brownies Sunday night, and used some Betty Crocker frosting. It was so sickly I only managed one piece, and the other half. I don't think I've learnt my lesson though, as I'm sure to try it again tonight.0

Perhaps some one left it out in the rain, and it took so long to make it, and they'll never have the recipe again?"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

I am intrigued to know which company just so I can avoid it, could you PM me if you don't want to disclose the name on the forum?Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

You don't have to have another party to let your son have some nice cake; and to send some to [for example] his nursery friends, his family, his friends etc, to make up for it. I'd want my money back if it was inedible not a partial refund, and I'd return the cake so that she could see the evidence. Then you can spend it as and when you wish.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Gateauver it!0

I would want a full refund too - the cake was unsuitable for its intended recipients, and a birthday cake is a big part of the celebration, not like sausage rolls going wrong
Definately go for the full amount back, and it may also teach her to ask customers in futute
