Break with young kids, beach, where to go/what to do?

We're planning a holiday come the end of June to 'celebrate' DP finishing university.
There'll be four of us, me, DP, our three-year-old DD and by that time nearly one-year-old DD. Me and DP will just be happy to get away (we haven't had a holiday since we got together!) so we're gearing it more towards the kids.
We're not planning anything too overboard as with them being so young we figure we'd rather save anything 'fancy' until they're older. So what we're looking at is four/seven nights, child-orientated break, preferably at the beach (as requested by DD1 who is obsessed with going as she's never been before!) Was thinking UK but could go abroad depending on price, looking at £400-£500 max. Was hoping for half board but would go self-catering if it worked out considerably better.
The only place we've really looked at is Butlins for four nights at Skegness (w're in East Midlands), looks great for the kids but were wondering if we could book accommodation separately and do our own thing for a week which would prob be cheaper but would it be better?
Anyone with any experience or pointers?
Thanks!

There are some fab offers at the mo - 5 nights in Costa Brave All Includive in June for around £150 (less for the kids). Your youngest will prob be free as she wont occupy a seat on the plane. You'll easily find something under £500 and why stay in the UK if you can go abroad?

Tbh abroad would be lovely but we're not minding either way, just the thought of an actual holiday is enough for us! :j :j :j
My experiences of abroad have been Ireland (abroadish LOL), Rome and New York, I've never done the sun holiday thing, have been looking at deals though to get acquainted with what's out there and what's there for the kids - I don't want to go somewhere where there's no kind of kid's club or any activities for them to do, that's what worries me about picking that kind of deal.Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

Your hotel will be named, you can then get up the hotels webpage and find out what kids club facilities there are. You can even give them a call and check its all running okay.
Kids will love going on a plane, 3y/o will anyway!!0
