Keeping my money under my mattress

Ok, I have officially given up on UK bank accounts and going to start keeping my cash under my bed, probably safer there too.

Even the, in banking terms, legendary First Direct service turns out to be useless.....

2 weeks ago, apply online, says will hear back in 24 hours

36 hours later call and get told website is wrong its 2-3 days

Another 24 hours later call again to be told the application stalled due to an ISA I closed circa 6 years ago need to reapply from scratch

Apply again online, again get told hear back in 24 hours

2 days later, call again, advised website is wrong but it is up to 5 days now to hear!

Call again, get told that need to send in ID for partner, long discussion on what was suitable. Posted in next morning

3 days later get a chaser email saying ID is required and voicemail asking to call. Phone them to be advised they dont know why either had been done as ID had been received.

Call again, get told they need further info. Provide, they then say they need further info from partner, advise not possible to contact by phone at present as she is currently out of contact other than occasional email etc they say the application will expire prior to when she is back.

Next day, they actually call and leave voicemail!!!!!!

Call them back on telephone number given, 12 minutes later after speaking to 4 people finally get to the right team. Asked for missing details on me. Then say they are simply awaiting proof of ID. Tell them they had previously confirmed they'd received the ID. They now say they cannot accept the ID as not full name on it.

Citi on the other hand say I needed to speak to a CitiGold Manager and they'd call me back "tomorrow morning". 2 weeks on still awaiting call back.

HSBC Premier admitted to miss leading pre-sale

Of cause my credit file now has 1 HSBC and 2 First Direct credit searches which isnt going to help getting applications elsewhere. All of which I have been told would be removed but not yet (though the last FD one would be a bit optimistic yet)

  • While you wrote this message another few hundred kids died of starvation around the world and undoubtedly another few hundred people were deliberately bumped off by their 'rulers' (Syria etc). Bloody annoying when services don't work as expected but the sun is shining and we live in a free and democratic country; rejoice for you are still very blessed.

Cash in the house is least safe of all. Still, your choice...

It's not very comfortable trying to sleep on a bumpy mattress, keep it under the floorboards.

Get a fireproof safe if you must go down that route and bolt it down with concrete.

I think you are grossly over estimating the amount of fivers I have to put under the mattress :o

Get a safe YES / fill it with bricks / hide your money in the freezer / a burglar will concentrate on stealing your bricks .

I understand your frustration, so the best thing you can do with walk with your feet and find a better bank. I hate this idea that people think one bank is better then another. I deal with most banks in the UK (i have 10 bank accounts), and I can tell you all of them can be rubbish and all of them can be good, it just depends on the situation.
