Am I right to do this?

  • what did the survey say exactly?

did it say that the floorboards were creaking and that it should be investigated? ie. was there a cause for the creaking? in one area or many?

many floorboards creak for no/a simple reason. but, it could mean that there is a woodworm beetle infestation (or something else).

the survey should have said if you need to be bothered about it.
  • this made me chuckle..what a whopper..

Glad it made you chuckle, I was asking for some advice. Believe it or not, some people have never moved house before.

Keep your ignorant and worthless comments to yourself.
  • If you have not moved house before, and don't know anything about DIY, you might not know whether this was important or not. The OP was asking for advice. Remember what Martin says 'there is no such thing as a silly question'.

OP, I would say in most older houses the floorboards squeak and it is easily remedied (see above). If they had woodworm I would imagine the survey would have said so.

I did give advice and bloody good advice too.

my method would cost about a tenner and getting soliitors and estate agents involved about 5/6 hundred quid!
  • Nelly, I was not referring to you. One or two people have been less than helpful - I was just reminding them of Martin's rules.

How old is the house and what exactly did the surveyor report? Did you notice the creaking when you looked around the house?

I bought a house with creaky floor boards recently. Once I got it I lifted the floor boards to retack em. The Joists were eaten through with woodworm had I left them much longer i would have been living in the basement. ;-) The point of my story is. The weak Joists caused the creaking. So I would at least get a few floorboards lifted and check out underneath ;-) Even if you have to pay for it.
  • Help! I hope this hasn't been covered before. My house was built 2001. We moved in in 2002. Then there a few creaks in a few places which didn't bother us. As time has passed each upstairs room and the landing seems to have more and more places where it creaks. The boards are tongued and grooved chipboard. I am beginning to think I am paranoid as I can hear every movement anyone makes upstairs. Should I replace with reclaimed floorboards? Thanks

No-one really should ignore creaky floorboards, 'speshally in an old house. The cause could be as minor as a bit of shift where the old nails have popped thru (easily remedied as Nelly pointed out) right thru to dodgy joist due to rampant dry rot.

Depends partly on the survey, although I never have much faith in 'surveys' preferring to do this stuff myself, it would be a good starting point as to the real cause of the creaks. You really don't want to involve solicitors and give them an excuse to soak you for more cash if it just turns out to be badly relaid boards after they were perhaps lifted for a bit of rewiring or whatever.
