Just been looking for a contract phone for dd 12th birthday, but im not sure what data will be enough for her. she would like a blackberry curve. its £15 a month for 750mins talk time and 5000 txt, and 500MB or i can pay an extra £2.50 a month for 1GB and everythings capped.
I don't think she will be a big user of the Internet on the phone, mainly wants it for the BBM.

Only thing I would say against it is its a 24 month contract which is a long time to a youngster. Have you looked at a sim only deal and buy the phone from somewhere like Phones4u?

i looked at the sim only on tescos, but to buy the blackberry curve is £130.00 and then £7,50 for call, texts and £7.50 for the extra data which is £15 a month, for with the one i chose its an extra £2.50 a month for the phone. looked on t mobile and o2 for the same plan as tesco they want £36 to £40 a month tesco seamed to be the cheapest

Tesco blackberry sim only deals with plenty data

Blackberry 8520 £114.95 plus £10 airtime but if you have an existing sim with one of the networks you can get round having to buy the top-up and they come unlocked to the specified network.

Not many places selling this model and to be honest I doubt it will last 24 months.

ps if you go for the Tesco offer with phone I doubt she will need the extra data as you say the kids mainly use the BBM.

to be honest i dont think she would us all those minutes either, so myself and dh would use her phone to ring family and friends, but with being a 24 month contract i now shes only 12 now but she will probably be using more text and web when she reaches nearer 14. never having a contract before im not sure which deal would be the best, i have tried talking her into having one of the newer blackberry but she want the curve 8520

I would not be getting my child a phone on a 24 month contract, or any contract for matter unless you are going to pay out for insurance.

If they lose the phone you are stuck paying out for that contract at least on a rolling sim only or payg you can cancel if the phone is lost.

If you do decide to get contract with insurance, make sure your daughter is on the insurance as the user/one of the users otherwise if she loses it and isn't they may not payout like they did to my friend when her son lost his as the insurance was in her name.

If you are buying instore check with Tesco what happens if the phone gives up the ghost if they will replace or repair. My daughter went through 2 in just over a year, stopped working for no particular reason. She has an iphone now but she is a lot older.

I really don't want to put you off either and I have a Tesco sim only deal myself and used a voucher deal to buy the phone, find them very good customer service wise and having checked o2 the Tesco deal does seem the best.

eta, good point about losing the phone.

I know I could get a better deal on a contract but my 14 year old just has orange payg. They only really use BBM. I top up £10 a month and on dolphin package, this gives them 300 free texts & unlimited access to Facebook (& bebo & myspace - does anyone still use these?!). then the charge of bbm (£5) gets deducted from the £10 credit, leaving £5 for calls for the month.

As Edinburghlass said, 99% of the usage is BBM.

This works for us as if the phone was lost (has happened x 3 but not since getting a BB, phew!) we can cancel the sim and orange transfer the remaining credit on to a new sim.

Also my biggest fear with a contract is the phone being lost and a massive bill being run up before I know to cancel it.

I don't think that phone has 3G either, which can be in a problem in certain areas with the Tesco network (O2) as for example I can get 5 bars of 3G at my workplace and home but no 2g at all. In 2 years time it could be even worse.

id steer well clear of contracts for someone that age

you have no control over what theyre going to do what they do now on payg is irrelevant coa they cant go over a limit

with a contract its like a free for all
    What goes around-comes around
