Credit checks: how do they find your details? (possible problem with long name?)

I just checked my online credit report information after applying for a credit card and having received their worst rate even though I thought I was a good applicant.

My situation is that I've got a pretty long name, with 2 names and 2 surnames, so it doesn't usually fit in any form and companies, banks, etc just put whatever so they're able to enter my details in their system.

For example:
* Real name (something like): Juan Luis Rodriguez Appellidolargo
* Banks: Juan Luis Apellidolargo
* Credit card: Juan Rodriguez
* Electoral roll: Juan L Rodriguez

so then I tried to standardise it and try to use 'Juan Rodriguez' for non-official applications.

What I have seen though is that no one seems to have checked my credit report for any application in the last few years (when I have applied like for 3 credit cards) and I was wondering if maybe they checked and couldn't find me?

Any idea how they find people for those credit checks? Could this be the reason of them offering me the worst rate and worth me calling them to explain?

Cheers!

    Usually first name last name then address.

    So you would be better of putting all credit apps as either Juan Luis Rodriguez Appellidolargo or Juan Appellidolargo.

    You could alias`s to your credit reports

    I have a double barreled surname and some lenders know me as:

    John Smith-Jones but others know me as John Jones etc

    I've been using Juan Rodriguez for my credit cards as that's the 1st surname in Spain, the last surname is less relevant... but here, I've seen all kind of mixes TBH.

    I've just joined experian.co.uk now to see what appears there as well.

    Do you mean that you can put different names as alias for your credit report? How/where do you do that?

    I think it's checked using your name (first and last, rest not being important), date of birth and address.

    Source - One of my pals works with O2.

    Interesting, as I've never ever used the 2nd surname as it's not really important in Spain.

    That might explain things... let's see what experian reports when I receive confirmation of the subscription.

    The credit reference system will only know about your credit. So yes if you don't have any, then there is none to find.

    Best port of call to remedy such a problem is therefore applying for a small overdraft on your current account (which of course you will plan never to use) or a credit card with your existing current account provider, which you will pay off in full every month so you never pay any interest!

    I have never ever used my overdraft but it shows up on my credit report every month, so that's a good thing for my credit score!
    Indecision is the key to flexibility :)

    This is all very interesting but as the credit card was issued, they presumably found him!
