Doesn't matter if it's a Apple product or not.

PcWorld will deal with it if taken into store. Dealing with Apple direct is quicker and thats why I suspect they referred you to the Apple Store. But there are in store procedures for PcWorld to book it in and arrange a repair.

Also they will test it in store, If it works in store they may book it in for a extended test.

First thing I'd suggest is does it work on any other network (other than the Apple one) if it does then I'd suggest changing the channel of the router to 1 or 6 or 11, or/and updating the firmware.

Go back to the Apple store again and tell them about trying it on a friends WiFi ... for persevering and working at trying to correct the issue - they'll likely exchange it for you.

Apple have the best warranty service available, if you buy a Samsung device and experienced a similar issue - your experience of getting it replaced wouldn't be as pleasant.

retailers won't deal with faulty apple issues - you have to contact apple before the retailer will take it back. i found this out with the first apple product i bought, which was faulty, i had to ring apple customer services in india to establish the fault, they then gave me a number which i could give to comet before they would accept the return.

the fault is obviously with your ipad not their router. i would suggest ringing the apple customer no which pc world should be able to give you.
I'm playing all the right notes, just not necessarily in the right order!

Except PcWorld Will deal with the issue.

They have the procedures to deal with any manufacture, to comply with the SoGA.

I've booked a slot for Apple to call me tomorrow evening. I'm not sure what else to do other than demand a replacement from them. Presently sitting about three feet away, with one bar on the signal, and the router directly in front of me.

All PCWorld would have done, is book an appointment for Apple to come and pick the iPad up and take it away for testing they said. It's extraordinarily stressful; given that the damn thing cost so much money, and as of last night for no apparent reason it's now fairly useless, but there's nothing I can do despite it being under warranty.

I almost wish it would brick so I could take it back with no quibbles - and at this point, a refund is definitly a consideration, although I purcahsed an iPad for the missus and that's what I want.

Taking a video showing the two iPads will be the best solution I think. That shows that there isnt a wifi problem and that there is a problem with the iPad. You could even use the iPads to film each other...

Strange, I have a problem with my iPhone 4 home button last month, I'd factory reset the phone and it would fix the fault for a week or so then it would return.
When I got to the Apple store in Birmingham I couldn't replicate the fault as it had been restored the night before. The lovely man at the Genius Bar said no problems and instantly exchanged it.

Well if you get no joy from Apple in store then your other option is to appeal to Apple Call centre to replace it, it take it to PcWorld, where they will test first and send to apple.

IF it works on every other network other than your own then it's a router problem.

You do have to see it from both ends, from Apples end, you took it into store, they tested it on their network that they know is setup properly and works correctly. If it works fine, it's either your router or something your doing wrong.

Also, in your first post you ask who's accountable. It's always the retailer, so any problems or recourse is down to them. They are not bound by Apple's T&C, but are governed by both the Sales Of Goods Act and also their store policy, within the first 28 days the unit can be exchanged (as a gesture of goodwill), within 21 days it can be refunded or exchanged/replaced, and within the first year will be sent away for repair. It's just in this case apple will act as repair agents, and as your close to a apple store I suspect they gave you a choice in store, either leave it with us and we'll send it to apple for repair/exchange or take it to Apple who will exchange on the spot if faulty. They didn't wash their hands of it, but you choose to go to Apple direct to get a speedier resolution.

Absolutely, - but - if it doesn't work on other networks, it's still something Apple aren't going to take into account, unless they're prepared to come round my mates' houses with me so I can prove it, as they're only ever going to test on their own network.

I imagine they use the Airport Extreme base units instore, which are lovely and all and frankly an astronaut could connect to them from the moon, but it isn't indicitive of real, consumer cirsumstances - I think a phone call tomorrow night, then back to the store on Tuesday with a video.

Elsewhere someone has suggested it's the result of an update on the iPad which would be fair enough, but then I would have to argue it's no longer fit for purpose after a change Apple have made. I'm sitting looking at it now, with one bar, and the bloody router within arms length. Gah!
