VW Touran Cranking up problem
Hello, not sure if this is the correct forum? If not can you point me to the best place for my question?
I've had my 2004 VW Touran 2.0 TDI DSG(automatic) with 45000 miles on the clock for a few months now. The car runs very well but I have to crank up the engine quite alot before it starts (only if the engine is warm). I have already changed the temperature sensor and spent over £100 for a specialist garage to run diagnostics, in the end I was advised to wait until the car fails to start altogether then get it fixed!!
I would much rather know what is wrong in advance. The car has been services regularly but the injectors have been touched as far as I know, could the injectors need a servicing? I also get the occasional smoke when I press hard on the accelerator (I changed the air filter hoping this will sort this bit out).
Starting the engine from cold happens within a split second, with hardly any engine cranking required. Any clues about why I have to crank up the engine alot (1 or 2 seconds but getting worse I think..) if starting from warm would be very appreciated.
Many thanks
Emma
Things that I have tried so far:-
- Changed temperature sensor
- Changed air filter
- Changed oil and filter
- Changed gearbox oil
- Run full standard diagnostic check
- VW/BMW specialist carried out start up diagnostics

is it choking on its own fumes or maybe something like an egr stuck open
personally i would take it to someone that has a clue because to do a basic scan and tell you to come back when it breaks down beggers belief0 -
Hello s b,
14 months on and I still have the same problem, and the car won't permanently break down either! Does anyone know of a decent specialist in Cambridgeshire who may be able to help?0 -
Have you had the glowplugs replaced? Even new ones can be faulty.
Have you blocked the EGR valve to see if it gets any better?
No mention of a fuel filter there.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
look at the starter motor, have it inspected and tested.
has been known for these starters to give warm start issues.
if not fuel pump issuse probably a sensor on the primer head faulty.0 -
Many thanks everyone!
I now have a good list of possible causes which I can take to my friendly garage (not VW specialist though..) when I next go there. Here is the list in case anyone is interested. I put this list together from web searches and from this forum:
- finally figured it out! It was a vacuum leak caused by a rupture in the oil vent line.
- Change ur coil-pack that should fix that i have 01 jetta so know what ur talking about..
- mine was vacuum leak going into the valve body. the hose started to crack. i have 99.5 jetta MKIV

I have the same issue on my 05 Touran and wonder if you have found a solution and had it fixed?
My local garage have said that it could be the starting motor but I'm not willing to pay for a new one unless I know that it's defiantly that.0 -
Considering nobody has been back to this thread for nearly two years doubt you're going to get an answer.
Defiantly?0 -
With diesels, this can be a lot of things.
From wrong/old engine oil to damaged piston rings (high mileage or driving too hard).
If it's a school run car (as most huge 4x4s are) then it could be a low mileage DPF related issue.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
