positive balence on tesco credit card

can any one help me on this one. i have a positive balence of £170 on a tesco credit card due to a refund i've had on a faulty product.

I dont spend a huge amount on the card so may be a while before this will be cleared by normal spending.

does any one know if they can send a cheque to me for the excess balence? or is it just that i'll have to spend on the card till the balence is nil?

If you call them up I'm sure they'll be prepared to send you a cheque.

Although if you use the card for normal "spend" you'll get Clubcard points.

Shoppping, petrol, spring DIY costs - could you use the card for routine bills like this?

i just used similar to treat myself to something from tesco direct via topcashback as every little helps.

Just curious whilst we pay interest on anything we ow on cc why do they not pay interest on anything we have in these circumstances.

Because it's not part of the agreement to provide credit to Tesco. And there may even be something in the small print (obviously a refund would be an exception) about going into credit on the account.

Deposit taking comes under a different regulatory regime. Whilst transient positive balances are sometimes inevitable, the CCs would run into difficulty if they started to encourage it.

  • Another way to reduce the positive balance would be to use the card buy something on behalf of a friend or relative. They pay you in cash and you pocket the Clubcard points.

If you get the refund remember you will probably lose the clubcard points you got on the original purchase

Use it to buy things you would normally have paid cash for

You could just take a cash advance for the £170. The account is in credit so there will be no interest. You will pay a cash advance fee (£5.10 if your card charges 3%) but you can have the cash in your hands immediately without asking for/waiting for a refund cheque.

Alternatively, and preferably, just spend the £170 on purchases. Surely you can transfer £170 of your purchase spending to the card.
