Get £4 in Clubcard Deal vouchers for old inkjet cartridges

Some MoneySavers had trouble finding the recycling bags in Tesco stores due to their popularity. The good news is you can now order up to five recycling bags online.


What's the deal?

Tesco is offering 100 Green Clubcard points (the same as normal clubcard points) in exchange for every inkjet cartridge that is recycled; or you can opt for a £1 donation to Red Cross. Now as I always say never, ever, ever, ever spend this in-store. Instead swap them for Clubcard Deals vouchers and they're worth four times the amount, so £4. They can then be used for things like days out, RAC membership or magazine subscriptions. (For more info read Loyalty Schemes: Tricks to improve your stash).

What to do?

• Grab one of the envelopes from Tesco customer service and place your empty inkjet cartridge in there.
• Fill out the tear off slip at the top of the envelopeand place it inside the envelope.
• Don't forget to add your clubcard number on it.
• Seal the envelope and stick it in the post.

Printers that are included in the offer are: Hewlett Packard printer, Lexmark printer, Dell printer, Canon, BC02/05/20/BX2/BX5 printers.

How? Just had my Tesco clubcard statement through. They are doing a scheme where you can pick up envelopes at the customer services desk to send back your old cartridges for recycling and they will give you 100 green points or donate £1 to the British Red Cross.

Now it strikes me that if you opt for the 100 points, you can then convert these into Tesco Clubcard deals which give 4 times the value and you can spend on lots of things (we've just booked ferry tickets to Holland). So a recycled cartridge is actually worth £4 to you. If you feel the guilt trip thing about denying the Red Cross a quid, you'd be doing them more of a favour if you sent them a donation of a £1 and giftaided it as you'd then be giving them £1.28. If you or your other half is a 40% taxpayer, you can also claim back 12% of the donation against your tax on your tax return, so you effectively give 88p, the charity gets £1.28 and you've got £4 to spend on a Deal. (I think the 28p/12p are correct but please forgive me if they aren't they are around those figures.)

I think it's 28p/18p.

I just picked up some envelopes in Tesco this morning as I have a cartridge to send back and probably more to come soon.

They're also doing a similar scheme on Mobile 'phones - I think you get 500 points for each 'phone.

they have been doing this for quite a while, i have sent them about 30, thanks to my customers who like to throw them away.

Can't you just buy a refill ink kit instead of getting rid of your used cartridges?

The quality of the print deteriorates quite quickly. This isn't a problem for printing out junk, but is a problem for printing photos. Furthermore, the refill inks come with no guarantee about longevity. It would be a sin to get out some wedding photos 25 years later and file a pile of faded and blank cards.

For on-line shopping and internet banking confirmation screens, and other such junk, I use a PDF printer and just keep them on my hard drive. I can print a hard copy later if I need to, but I almost never do. http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/

I have 5 Epson carts ready and had been asking CS at Tesco for a envelope but they had run out.

Now I don't have to bother.

The Printer Cartridge heads do eventually wear away to give a poor print standard but I tend to refill a cartridge between 15 - 20 times before sending it back to Tesco.(I print a lot of paperwork, so refill almost every week) Even then when I buy a new one, I go for the Tesco own brand which is a reconditioned one anyway. So you can get your use out of it for sure.

As I rarely print photos its not too big an issue, but more often that not you have a seperate cartridgef or them anyway.

Will Tesco accept and pay points for a cartridge that has been previously refilled or do they want virgin ones?

My envelope doesn't seem to say anything about previously refilled cartridges. I does say that they'll only take inkjet cartridges that work in the following printers:
HP
Lexmark
Dell
Canon BC02/05/20/BX2/BX5
