I got a couple of cardboard templates from Royal Mail when the large and small letter thing initially started. I wouldn't rely on them because obviously the card can 'wear' and be forced slightly, but they're quite good for starters, if they're still available.
I now have one of the Helix rulers and rely more on that.
And don't forget to stock-up on stamps before the price-rise. The more you can afford to buy, the more you will save in the long-run. Just make sure you buy ones that state "1st Class" or "2nd Class" on rather than a monetary amount.
