PC not shutting down fully?

Options
Ok guys need more help :D

I reinstalled my uncles PC with WinXp and as i was installing new antivirus etc did not shut it off for most of the day.

Now when i came to shut it off it closes down but the power is still there, also the monitor is still on aswell.

I can hear the fan going and if i press reset it powers back up to windows.

I asked a friend and he suggested it could be the computer is in hibernation so i disable that in Display but that did not fix it.

Anyone know whats the problem?

  • This is interesting as I have a similar problem. My hard drive turns off but all the fans keep going!

I diagnosed the problem as to a motherboard fault. While putting a new cd drive in i found a capcitor oin my bedroom floor later that night. I'm gathering that was from the mobo and due to that it doenst shut down properly :)

I now hold the button down for 8 seconds before i go to bed after the hard drive is shut down lol!

Well it was working fine yesterday. But did not shut it down after installing XP as was installing more software for it.

It cannot be the motherboard? :(

Ok his system was 98 so upgraded with a brand new copy of XP. and everything went fine untill this problem.
  • Its the bios ........ it needs upgrading to support xp

the machine has shut down properly so if your not bothered just press and hold each time
  • the other thing you can try is to update all the devce drivers, run a component ID program then go to each webpage for each piece of hardware and update the drivers to the xp drivers

You should be able to rule out a driver issue by booting into Safe Mode (repeatedly hit F5 as soon as the BIOS screen has gone until you get the bootup menu, then select "Safe Mode"). If you cannot shut down cleanly then it's not a driver issue.

    Things to consider:
Is the AV program trying to scan media (CD-ROM/Floppy etc) to protect from a possible bootup virus on the next startup? Norton does this by default (or certainly used to at least!)
Is there any error message (Program failed to respond?) during shutdown - these are displayed if the monitor is left on.
ATX power supplies are controlled by the motherboard. It could be a component has just failed (I'm guessing it's an old machine as it was running Win98)
If it shut down in Win98 then it should shut down in XP. The only thing I would suggest checking in the BIOS is to make sure it recognises there is a "Plug and Play OS installed".
