That is a perfectly reasonable point and its disappointing when posts are "economical", however the argument cuts both ways. The industry processes, including the requirement for periodic statutory reads, are also implicated.

Indeed. I would have thought the poster / friend would be able to haggle any claimed liability based on the back billing code, my only reservation is whether that would be sufficient to see the entire bill written off.

To suggest that you could confuse consumption of a little used lock up with a shared domestic property does not seem credible. Just what bills (in either £ or KW) were you and your friend actually paying?

agreed! This is such a long time ago, tough to remember....between the house (3 bedrooms) we were paying £70 or £80 a month perhaps?

I had been ringing up EDF every month to give them a meter reading...I would've thought at that point they would've realised something was way, way off.
Without understanding what has been paid, we can't see whether we have 2 properties paying for each others consumption and we need that to comment really.

don't think we had 2 properties paying for each other, unfortunately... apparently we were paying for the wrong meter, and noone was paying for the other one!

as far as I'm aware, the back bill was written off (or perhaps transferred to the landlord, as it was his lock up).... they'd agreed it was all done and dusted at the time, and again when the account was closed. So I'm unsure why they're getting in touch again. I haven't heard from my friend (who received the solicitor's letter) in a while. The poster on here is right; I can't be totally sure EDF are after money until we get in touch

    update:

another letter has arrived for my friend.

an amount of money (a fair bit less than a grand) due for "outstanding bills" for April 2011 to November 2011.

My friend moved out in January 2011 and closed the account (I moved out in November 2010)

    hmmmm

Have they left the accounts open until these dates because they didn't close them down? If estimates are involved, this would inflate them.

Given they keep moving the goal posts, you only possibility here is another complaint with all the fact in and reference to the person so agree it was sorted last time asking why they are backtracking on this.

Is the customer account Reference and Meter Point Reference for the same as your (proper) old one or is it for the other (out building) meter?

I'm suspecting there is a very good chance you've closed one account and they've left you attached by name to the other meter too.

Does your friend have the "we are sorry you are leaving" letter and the closing down details?

If they trace a supply to you, they will alter the name on the account as long as they are sure they have enough evidence.'
