We just bought our first house and they took the fire with them!!!

I disagree with timmyt purely on the fact the vendors have not fulfilled the terms of your contract.
Check to see if you have legal cover on your home insurance and go for it. Unless people challenge this sort of thing it will never change.0 -
Is there any chance that as it was free standing at that point a removal company might have taken it by accident?0

Completely agree with FireWyrm. I'd be arguing the point on principle. You can't rely on what was listed on the EA details but the fixtures and fittings form is part of the contractual agreement and if they take something that was marked as being left then you're well within your rights to make a claim against them!
Have your solicitor try and get something sorted. If the seller plays hard ball back and refuses then you can decide whether to pursue it legally or not (which may not be worth it, depending on the value of the fire).
No harm trying in the first instance though!0 -
It happened to us with a fridge once. At our previous house all the appliances were built in so we needed a fridge. We contacted our solicitor and who contacted theirs and we recieved a cheque for about £100. Fortunately we hadn't moved in so could afford to wait and see what happened.0

I did wonder that, but the OP stated that the space had been boarded up with plywood and the pipes removed. That doesn't sound to me like it was simply removed for repair or remedial work behind the fire, then removed by accident.0 -
