Can`t cope with this

I don`t know if this is the right area of the forum to post this.Apologies if it`s not.
This morning, I recieved a letter from Credit Security Limited, demanding that I pay them £386.67 by 23rd March, otherwise doorstep collectors will come. The total amount owed is £787.89.
The debt is for bank charges with HBOS. I owed almost £2000 in charges, which I paid. Then I moved to a current account with Alliance +Leicester (I have never been overdrawn with them).
However, letters from Hbos and various credit companies have arrived over the years (this debt is from 2004). I took them to a local agency that works with debt / legal advice. A solicitor wrote to another debt company last year about this debt, and instructed the company to write to or telephone him, not me. He also advised me that, legally, they can`t touch me since my income is DLA and Income support (I have recently had him help me fill in the ESA form), and that there are differences with Scottish Law to UK law that make many of their threats not possible.
I may have had phone calls from them, but I don`t answer my phone, unless it`s from people I know (have long term mental health problems).
I can`t handle this any more. I have just put this letter in an envelope and am preparing to go out and post it to this solicitor at the agency I mentioned earlier. I wish I could just pay them whatever they want so they would just leave me alone.
I am really scared, and struggling to see when this will ever end.
I don`t know if anyone here has any words of wisdom.
Thank you for reading.

Hey Elle
Can't offer any practical advice but I like this quote: -
"Hold your head high, stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but morning comes. Keep hope alive."
Jesse Jackson
Remember it, and I hope it gives you the strength to cope. I wish you well and hope others on here can offer you the practical advice you need. x0 -
Elle,
You're saying this is from 2004 I'm sure one of the experts will verify my line of thought but have ever acknowledged the debt?0 -
Thank you both.Elle,

I don`t know what that means, acknowledging the debt.
I paid off what I though was owed. However, there were other charges apparently going through at the time of me doing that.0 -
I'm thinking that debt may be whats called statue barred. Give me a minute and I'll find a link with the details on0

Kiwimama, thanks for saying the above, I have notice that there is a 'build up' of 'sarcasm and other unhelp responses creeping onto the MSE of late, I too was going to post, and indeed did about problem where I used gramatical english and explained in full, still got a snarky response about you dont say this and you don't say that 'give us the full story.
Jumps off soapbox!
Lam --- when did you make the last payment on this particular account, and by what method. If you are in scotland them the SB time is 5 years from last payment or acknowledgeent, 6 for the rest of us.0 -
please dont be scared by the letters you get from debt collecting companys, thats why they send them to scare you, there is no way you casn pay this by the date they have said and they wont send anyone to your house they just tryin to scare you,and even if i am wrong about them sending someone (and im not) they cant do out without a court order,if you are going to pay this then offer them a reasonable ammount that u can afford,if you dont owe it then tell them you dont and let them take you to court, but please dont let it make you ill.i nknow ive been there, good luck0

The same happened to me in a post I made on another subject, I was criticised for my spelling despite helping the OP out, the person who criticised didnt add anything to the debate.
I was tempted to reply, but thought why I should I get wound up by it so I didnt. Thanks I shall now recheck the spell checker just thought I would offer some help and advice and obviously my help is useless because my spelling is shoddy.
Never mind the fact I found and posted a link to someone who actually knew what they were on about rather then pretending I know what I was about.0 -
Try here: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges about reclaiming bank charges. If you've been in financial difficulty (and it sounds like you have) you may be able to claim on the grounds that the bank have been increasing you financial hardship.
It may not work, but it doesn't take more than a letter or two to try so it's worth a shot

Your post was helpful, ignore them, they've got some sort of problem going on there.
Elle, you can't do anything til monday so don't let it ruin your weekend. Is it something CAB can help with? No doubt lots of others will be along with helpful advice, you'll be in good hands.
