Cathedral City Cheese

I used to love this product, but it's not what it was. The taste and texture has changed a bit and I don't know what Dairy Crest are trying to do with the size of it, but it is now so thin it takes five sliced to make a piece of cheese on toast.

Perhaps they are making it small enough so you can post it 'large letter' ?

It certainly isn't a consistent product.

I remember when it was a truly strong cheese but it is a little anaemic, nowadays.

I've had packs where it has been too strong with unappealing lumps of what appears to be pure fat crystallised in it, not consistent at all.

It's really changed. The texture has become rubbery and it is nowhere near as strong as it used to be. I've switched to Lake District Cheese instead. It's a proper crumbly texture with a really strong taste.

One of the nicest cheeses I've found commonly around is Tesco Mature. It's consistent and tasty. I just can't believe that after all the years Dairy Crest have been hyping Cathedral City, that they've let it go to seed for the sake of a few shekels.

Funny you mention this as last night i noticed that the BOGOF i got in Tesco was not as good value as first thought, in 2 months they have reduced the size from 500g to 350g, i know this because we have a box for shredding of old receipts, and there was one in there from Tesco which had the same offer on, and they were 500g for the same price in January!

The golden cenarth is very nice but they do many other good quality cheeses.

I used to live near Cenarth (where Caws Cenarth comes from - it means Cenarth Cheese). Cenarth is a tiny cluster of houses near the gorgeous Teifi river, prople still occasionallu use coracles there and the salmon fishing is excellent if that's your thing. But any cheese from cows raised in such a staggeringly beautiful corner of god's own Wales has to be good...and it is...and it has been for at least 20 yrs :)

Yeah the cheese there is fantastic. I was at a Michelin stared restaurant and they served the cenarth and it literally melted in my mouth. Since then I order loads of the stuff! I can't fault them:-)
