There are three main parts to the UK retail area of Dixons Retail. I said I never worked for Currys or Dixons, thats 2 out of 3.

The standard does have such a condition.

I use HDDScan to look at the hard drive. So far, a surface scan has not turned up any bad sectors and neither has the Acer boot-time scan.

Yeah, if money were not so horribly tight, replacing the hard drive on my own dime is by far my preference. Changing hard drives isn't a huge problem and on the Acer, it appears to be unusually accessible for a laptop.

Ah well, my most vital work is stored online via Dropbox, I back up nightly (both as files/programs and a disk image) and if it all goes Pete Tong, I have a plan B in place (the use of another computer, albeit in the postgrad students' office). I'll call Dixons on Monday and see what they say.

Thanks a lot guys. I'll keep you updated on what happens.

In terms of time, a warranty repair at the moment will be about 12/13 days from being booked into store to coming back to store.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
