the offer is never 100% guarateed. they could change their mind the day before you start and give you a weeks pay. nothing you can do.

So wait for the offer letter (by post or i get it faxed) and then resign.

I work in HR and we always state that offers are conditional pending references, criminal records check, and occupational health clearance.

Even when I was applying for my current job, I didn't resign until I had my unconditional offer of employment, even though I knew there would be no problems with any of the checks.

How long dos it normally take to get references ?

and when would ou expect them to tell you if thy change their mind. I stat my new job May 21st but handing in notice at work 20th April.

surely they should have this by then ?

Can they retract a offer once its been made in writing and accepted ?

If the offer has conditions like references don't resign, tell them the start date is "notice" after the offer is unconditional.
