Did you wait for your offer letter before handing in our resignation?

Just wondering when people have handed in their resignation letter? Did you hand it in the day after you received offer over the phone or did you wait for your confirmation letter to come through first?

Wait for the letter. I've had a verbal offer then someone retracted about a week later (the HR person told me it had just happened to several people due to something going on in the company).

The company can always send you the letter by email ahead of the hard copy (can be signed and scanned).
  • For my current job, I resigned the day after I got the phone call.
Another job I did the same, only problem is 4 weeks after my notice period, the day I was supposed to start the new job, they refused to give me the job because of my reference.
No job is guaranteed until your employer is happy with your reference.

Never resign till you get the letter, that's the rules.
Happened to me too, got the phone call then they changed their mind, nothing is firm till it's on paper.

Exactly my thinking. HR woman told me she wanted my address (which is on the cv I sent) to send me official offer letter on Monday. It's Friday today and still nothing. I have just come back from a holiday and was hoping to hand in resignation on Monday. So annoying and so slow of them. Fingers crossed it will come tomorrow otherwise I will be chasing on Mon!

Congrats on the new job by the way, assuming you get the letter!

Don't resign till the offer is unconditional.

If they want you to start quickly they will have to wait if there are conditions like references.

I waited until all references were back. I didn't want anything going wrong. I start my new job 2nd April, yay! Away from my hellish previous employer.

How long dos it normally take to get references ?

and when would ou expect them to tell you if thy change their mind. I stat my new job May 21st but handing in notice at work 20th April.

surely they should have this by then ?

Can they retract a offer once its been made in writing and accepted ?
