My garden transformation - help with Veg patch layout

I'd make it a bit bigger than 20cm, put them in a foot from the fence and allow at least another foot on the other side before the lawn.
West facing is fine, my raspberries are all west facing.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
After some backbreaking work getting some tree roots out (tree chopped down by next door but root must still be live) got dug out enough for the rapsberry and blackberry.

They are were the canes are and there is only 1 cane of each so hopefully they will have enough space.
Did try to get a space for the blackcurrent and gooseberry but it was impossible. The tree roots were the size of an arm and although I cut some out there were so many.
Tried to square foot planting with my herbs I think it looks good. Made the grid out of bamboo canes.

Your new plot looks great! :T Congratulations, it's going to be lovely to sit out in during the Summer, I hope your crops come on well.
We are planning on doing something very similar to your veg area in the next few weeks and I was wondering what you have used for the "edge" of your patch? What you have there looks good and would be easy for the lawn mower to deal with to keep the edge tidy. We will be digging out an area that is currently lawn/weed, and want to try and keep it nicely defined, but don't want to spend out on anything fancy like the rope-top style concrete stuff etc.0 -
Thanks redlands we do love our new garden and have used it loads in th nice weather. The edging stones are the standard ones with a round edge tuned upside down will see if I can post a picture of them. Good luck with your work. Ahhhh.. they look good, and a good price too. Going to pop out now and have a look. Sun is shining today when we're "supposed" to be cold and cloudy, so have to take advantage!
Thanks TallGirl

Glad to be of help ideally I wanted a path down the side made of slabs like the patio but that was jus too pricey.
Having some problems with the slabs they seem to be getting loose. The builders are coming back to redo the but not until 21st April which is fine as I want to see how many become affected.
Just started filling up my beds using the square footage system suggested here. So far it looks frat.
Once the trees become establish and fill the beds with roots I shall make some raised bed and use that instead.
Got lots of seedlings coming along forgot to label my pots but won't do that again as I just tipped out the soil I planed cucumber in. Planning to have beans and cucumber growing up the spikes in the large pots.

Looking great!
One little thing to remember: make sure you're leaving somewhere to stand in between the plants! It looks like you are leaving some gaps between your squares but worth a reminder - I've had huge problems trying to find somewhere to put my feet so I can reach to weed and water some of my plants! :-)I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

It sounds like you would employ a builder to lay slabs. You could look into doing it yourself, much cheaper, and not that hard. And the forums here should help. (I should add that I have never laid slabs, but I've done a fair bit of other DIY work. Doing the work is often easy, once you find out the correct way to do it.)Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Thanks Leif you are right I wasn't going to do it myself and the other problem was that our patio slabs are smooth sandstone quite expensive. In the end with labour that row of edging stones cost me £168 and we are on the South Coast. Not going to have a path now.
Also I have made room between the squares for standing on definitely needed.Save £12k in 25 No 49
