Would you report to HMRC?

Following an earlier thread on non payment of tax on rental income, if you were aware of someone who was not declaring would you report them?

It depends who it is I guess. My first move would be to strongly recommend to said person that they should register for tax. The problem is, you have to register within a certain time from when you started so in the thread you mentioned, where the person had been not declaring tax for four years, they're due a severe sting in fines.

However, ultimately, if they blatently refused to declare tax, knowing that they should, yes I would report them.

Depends on whether it was my time of the month or not.

I think this was my thread the OP is talking about. The person concerned is the Mum of my son's best friend so I do speak to her often and don't want to sour things if she found out it was me. If I could guarantee anonymity then I would do it but the form on HMRC seems to be asking for a lot of details.

I really dislike people thinking that they are above the law but I don't want to rock the boat with my son

It depends if I liked them or not. I would try to persuade them to do the right thing, because it is in their interests to own up rather than to be found out by HMRC as HMRC are much more likely to be lenient if they think you are now being honest with them. If I didn't like them then I might report them.

Nope I wouldn't. Karma is a !!!!! and I mean what's the big deal. If they get caught its their problem. If they don't it's more money in their pockets than going on the war and other things I don't agree with. I don't agree with it only because I wouldn't want to live looking over my shoulder but if others do then I genuinely don't care.

If someone is not paying tax they should, they are defrauding every single person in this country - preventing money going on NHS, police, schools, old peoples' care, roads, etc.

    That makes it my business.

If I recall correctly the amount of uncollected tax in this country is significant. Just think what a difference it would make if people stopped thinking that they could be greedy and selfish, and decided to actually abide by the law intead.

    I'd report them.

    Yup.

Think we'd all grass up a murdered, rapist, p****ile, Fred Goodwin..

It's simply a matter of degree...

IMHO we don't want people who won't pull their weight in this country...

    Depends.

If they only owe a couple of grand, it would cost HMRC more money to collect it, so I wouldn't bother.

It's better to close all the loopholes in the existing tax system than getting too excited about accidental landlords who would only ever owe a couple of grand of tax.
