Receiving money from Poland

Hello :)

I did some editing work for a company in Poland over a month ago, and after I sent them the invoice (complete with account number, sort code, bank name, swift and IBAN numbers) they've sent me a number of emails saying that the account number isn't long enough, or they need my VAT number... As far as I'm aware, they have all my account info, and I'm not a registered business so don't have a VAT number.

I got an email this morning saying they tried to pay me and it bounced (they attached a copy of their bank statement as proof). The statement says the recipient bank is HSBC (I'm with Nationwide), so that might be the problem.

Does anyone know of any information they might need that I haven't given them? Otherwise, any suggestions for alternative methods of transfer? I've suggested Paypal to them, but I'm not sure whether that's an option for them. It would be great if anyone had any ideas - it's only 25 Euros, but that's quite a lot for me right now!

All the best, and thank!

The recipient bank may well be HSBC as some bank rely on others for handling their international transfers (mainly building socities and credit unions).

You might want to contact nationwide if you haven't already.

I believe some foreign exchange sites sites as xe.com may offer international money transfers.

Sorry to say this but I think they are just making excuses to delay payment/not to pay.

You should be looking at PayPal or Moneybookers or even cash in a registered letter. Bank charges will take care of nearly all of such tiny sums.

If you must have it sent via a bank transfer then ask your bank for your IBAN.

Nationwide do not charge to receive funds from abroad, but they do use HSBC as an intermediary, so you need to give 2 lots of details, there is something on the NW website about it.

My OH gets a pension from Norway paid to NW, so we had to find out about it.
