Weird - black sticky panel over spare RAM bay!

I asked on here a couple of weeks ago where I could find manuals for a Compaq Notebook 2504 - it was Chippy Minton that very kindly pointed me to copies on the web.

Subsequently I've bought 2 new RAM modules (the notebook belongs to a close friend) and this morning I've opened the back up to put the new RAM in; although the existing is only showing as 192MB, leading me to believe there was a 128MB and a 64MB in, when I've opened it up there is actually 1 x 256MB in and the 2nd bay is empty. Therein lies the problem - the second bay is covered with a piece of black, sticky back plastic, with the sticky side face down.

I'm obviously not keen to pull it off, as it could damage the section of board underneath - I can't believe that Compaq put this in at manufacturing, I know that one other person has had the back of the laptop, some time ago, but can't imagine why they'd do this.

Could there be a reason and what do you think of me pulling it off?

BTW, the friend who owns the laptop bought it new about 3 years ago and wouldn't even know how to take the back off! :D

  • Erm, it could be simply an empty black plastic cartridge plugged into the RAM slot to stop natural damage (i.e dust) getting into the slot?

  • Your existing 256 probably has 64 allocated to onboard video hence the 192 system ram.
