Install new windows DIY

Hi all,

Looking at getting new pvc windows for our house but not got much money so was thinking of buying from Screwfix / Wickes and installing myself...

Anyone got any advice on the practicalities of this. Is it easy / difficult? What tools do I need etc....

  • I think you have to get building control involved or get them done by fensa approved installer. More government meddling.
Nothing to see here, move along.

im sure if you are simply replacing windows, then no BCO is required.
    wickes are very good value.
fairly simple job for anyone with bit of diy skill. no real major problems.
apart from doing a bay window!
doing a bay will need 2 men, and prob the hire of acrow props etc..

normal diy tools. nothing special. hammer drill, good sharp masonary bits. chisels, saw, pry bar/s, battery drill/screwdriver. a trowel for making good?
    mortar, plaster, fixings.

    good tip.
tape the old window up with sticky tape first, lots of it. then break the window!
if working at height, make sure below is clear! keep the kiddies away.
leave a bin/s under the window outside. rubbish can fall straight into it.
    Get some gorm.

Read here http://www.fensa.co.uk/homeowners.html looks like you will need local authority building control approval to do it yourself. If you do it without this it could give you problems should you decide to move house.

Just fit them yourself, screw building regs thats just another tax, if your confidant in doing them yourself then do it!
When it comes to selling your house backdate your work, how they going to prove you fitted them!
  • Forget about fansa and the part p tax, plead ignorance and say they were in when you bought the house ;) Save yourself the hassle and the money!

fensa is another marketing hype org. loking after the interest of their members and not the consumer.
take no notice of whatever is their website marketing blurb.
check out the official gov site.

there are plenty of get out clauses there.

and if a lawyer does ask, they were fitted before june 30th 2002.
an invoice can be supplied no problem, off the puter!

the warranty is worth about the same as most members of fensa.
    Get some gorm.
  • Watch the glazing bar isn't dated.

    Or the profile.
  • i have seen many people fit their own windows, but when removing the old windows they seem to leave large gaps between the wall and the new window, thus creating a void, they then 'trim' this over with shiny white pvc

now what miffs me is that there is no point in having new 'energy efficient' windows when the heat will transfer throuhgh the pieces of plastic covering up the void

if you do avoid getting building control in make sure you insulate the void with mineral wool or the spray foam filler
Named after my cat, picture coming shortly
