Perhaps have a read of the recent MSE article and accompanying discussion thread on this very topic?northernireland10 wrote: »Hi,

Buy it before hand.
If it does go down which I don't think it will then you can claim a refund at the old rate, and then retax at the new lower rate.
But it much more likely to go upwards.0 -
no doubt it would go up, get it in and get it done before the tax man rubs his hands together in delight at the rise.0

One problem. Renew before 25th of the month in which the tax runs-out and you will get your tax dated from the 1st of the month you are in, so effectively, you pay on 20th March for 12 months Tax and the disc will expire on 28th Feb '13. Pay on/after 25th March and the disc will expire on 31st March '13.
In the past, VED has been raised, but with a start-date of 6th April rather than straight away.Never Knowingly Understood.

No it won't. If you do it online past the 5th of the month they will check when it needs to be renewed and do it from there. If you are in the Post Office they should ask and give you one from the start or end of the month.
They didn't ask me once and gave me one from the end of the month on a car I'd just bought, so I got three weeks free.0 -
I did this a few years ago, Wait until the day of the budget and then tax it as soon as you hear the results if it increases.
I think the increase applies from midnight? I taxed mine just before at the lower rate. Not going to be a huge saving but better in my pocket than theirs.
If it goes down wait a few days if you can.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
You're confusing the rules for taxing vehicles which have been subject to a SORN. If that's the case, to tax a vehicle from the first of the next month, it can only be done within two working days of the 1st.Renew before 25th of the month in which the tax runs-out and you will get your tax dated from the 1st of the month you are in
From here;-
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_069680When to apply
If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month. If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply. If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.
And here's the section from the rear of a V10;-If your vehicle is not taxed or has a SORN
If you apply in the last two working days of a month, the tax disc can start on the first day of the next month. If you apply before then, your tax disc will be backdated to the start of the current month. (Saturday is classed as a working day at Post Office® branches.I am a mortgage broker.
