Hi,

I have spent at least two hours this morning trying to get to the bottom of this problem.

IE boots up OK but two things are frustrating me.

ONE- is that I need to hit the 'BACK' arrow sometimes 2-3 times before it'll work and

TWO - Certain links are giving me the message shown in the title.

Some links are OK and some aren't and SOME times the link displays that then a couple of attempts later, lets me in.

Driving me mad here but I need to renew my Daughters Car Insurance and need the link from Quidco to work to save her some money.

Pleeeeease help someone.

Thanks

XP 3 + IE 8 (Does it in Firefox too) using AVIRA and windows own firewall plus a couple of other applications that have been on my system for ages.

As it is happening with more than one browser (m5rcc can't read), try using an alternative DNS - follow the steps here. You can always change it back to use your ISP's DNS if there is no improvement.

    Who is your ISP?

It's due to the custom mvps hosts file you installed.

Where it happens, click the arrow on the drop down box where the back button is, you'll likely see domains listed other than the one you're on - They'll be third party tracking/ad servers etc that have been blocked. The message you are getting - IE can't display... etc - That's the third party content being blocked by your hosts file - You can reset it if you want using this MS fixit - Temporarily turn of Avira's guard first.

    Don't forget to re-enable Avira.

It will affect all browsers - Not just IE.

    Yep. That did it.

Why didn't I come on here 4 hours ago???

Guess that's the only way to learn.

    Cheers Waddler.:T

On the original page I gave you in your other topic there's lots of information about how to use the hosts file if you wish to reinstall it (Use the drop down box and the Go! button).

Lots more to read now. Very interesting & informative.

I wsn't fully aware of what a host file was before. :)

    No problem.

I use Hostsman to manage my hosts file. You can update, view, edit, enable/disable etc at the click of a button.

DCM, if you don't already use it, add this one to the list of update sources.
