Can anyone help to explain what is happening on my PC and how to fix it? It's on XP operating system. This has been happening for some time now and all my efforts to diagnose have failed and any help/guidance would be appreciated
If I boot to windows log on screen and then login straight away then all seems fine and PC screen updates and shows desktop with all icons and runs quick.
If I delay logon by a few seconds transition to desktop is slow with several icon refreshes on the way.
If I delay logon even further (say 30 seconds after logon screen first loads) then there are no icons on desktop and windows boot seems to stop with no task bar. Task manager can be started and it shows no significant CPU activity.
No doubt more info will be needed to diagnose but what? Virus checker is up to date (Zonealarm) and scans regularly with no issues.

suggest you try a full scan with malwarebytes antimalware, see if it finds anythingFriendly greeting!0

You could create a new profile, see if the issue exsists on the newly created one as your profile may have become corrupted.0
-
try it without zonealarm (avast and windows firewall are free), and if that doesn't work, post a hijackthis log!!

With the time taken to faff around diagnosing this, one could have backed up important files and reformatted....0
