Saga travel insurance - huge price hike

Our son moved to the USA last year, and in order to visit him we took out a Saga policy thinking it probably represented good value as we are both over 60. I suspect it was not particularly good value but I did not have much time to research as we were invited out there on a flying visit and arranged it all in a bit of a rush. For a world wide annual policy for the two of us Saga charged £219. We are both fit and healthy with no medical conditions.

This week I got a renewal quote from Saga - for the same deal - they now want £286. This seems a very large increase given we made no claim and our circumstances have not changed. We are still in good health with no medical conditions. I am now 65 and my husband is 61.

Any comments?

As you have found SAGA are a rip off

Switch to a JOINT Nationwide Flex account-input £750 per month and you can then upgrade their free ANNUAL European Travel insurance (for £20 IIRC) to an ANNUAL WORLDWIDE policy.

Plenty of info on MSE about Travel insurance

But they have changed: at 65 you've moved to the next age band.

You should be able to see how much difference that makes by re-running the quote with you one year younger. I'd guess a big chunk of the increase would be that and the remainder down to the general increases in premiums that most folk are seeing :-(

It'd be worth casting around to see who might give you a better price; with no pre-existing medical conditions you don't need Saga and may be paying a premium for using them. That said I just ran your age + travel through Columbus and they came back with quotes starting at £226 and then stepping very quickly up to £309.

But, medical care in the US is expensive. Do you really need to pay for annual worldwide, inc US, cover if only some of your travel is to see your son? It might be worth pricing an individual policy for that trip and another, ex US, policy for the rest of your travel.

Hope you find something to suit,
