I'm going to submit my first generation meter reading for FIT payment to OVO Energy in a mo'.
1090Kwh generated this quarter. (Commencing 10th July)
Import for the month was 125 day Kwh and 48 night Kwh (E7)
Gas consumption for the month 2.7 units (whatever that equates to in Kwh, I really don't know).
    Family of 4
Too compicated is that for me..
    3.64 O's today simples....crying.gif (Leggoman Laughing)..coffee.gif

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).

  • Missed the revised PVGIS Climate target by one measly kWh so not too bad.

    September 2014 - 117 kWh
    September 2013 - 113 kWh
    September 2012 - 141 kWh
    September 2011 - 135 kWh

    PV Output

My system is coming up to its four year anniversary in a couple of weeks and, barring a volcanic ash cloud, the past twelve months generation will be the best so far.

  • Could someone please point me toward a detailed explanation and definition of O's . Whilst I am familiar with the calculation, a little more understanding of them and their relevance would be useful.
I'm assuming this has been well covered before somewhere but I have not seen it myself, hopefully to save someone a lot of typing in explaining it again.

    Thanks :)

Take a look at Oscargrouch's signature at the bottom of his posts, explains it perfectly;)

If you have a look at some charts on pvoutput.org, you'll see they show Oscars 'O's as Efficiency.
It is calculated by dividing the total daily generation by the rated size of your solar installation.
    I have 16 x 250w panels, giving me a 4kWp system.
So if I generate 12 kWh today (pretty please!), and divide that by my system, 4kWp, I end with 3 Oscars, or O's.

Dunno why Oscar declared this unit of measurement his (I prefer my ho's, always happy to have more ho's, but just one Oscar is more than enough! No sexist intentions, just my warped sense of humour!), but it's a relatively simple way of comparing systems of different sizes, equipment and location.

Some folk are happy with it as a rough guide, others will argue that it makes no sense and doesn't take into account all variables.

Nobody forces anybody to do anything here, so o, or ho, or not. Your call!

Not scientific but I've left that for the much cleverer people here!
They'll be along shortly to give a proper grown up answer!
4kWp, SSE, SolarEdge P300 optimisers & SE3500 Inverter, in occasionally sunny Corby, Northants.
Now with added Sunsynk 5kw hybrid ecco inverter & 15kWh Fogstar batteries. Oh Octopus Energy too.

The discussion of 'O' reminded me of a suggestion I made this time last year, where I offered the thought that an average daily O for the year was a useful measure. So I've updated last year's message to cover this year as well...

(My 'solar' year runs from the end of July) so:

    1/8/11 - 31/7/12

    3746kW/h =127% of PVGIS average daily 'O' value = 3.119

    1/8/12 - 31/7/13

    3453kW/h =117% of PVGIS average daily 'O' value = 2.875

    1/8/13 - 31/7/14

    3851kW/h = 131% of PVGIS average daily 'O' value =3.206

My figures for 2012-13 included a period when a bad connection on the roof prevented generation for some weeks (in winter). Allowing for this, I'm getting an average daily yield of about 3.1 'Os', or about 10kW/h per average day. I call that an OG (even if no-one else does).

The formula is [total annual generation] divided by [kWp] divided by [365]

(Incidentally, the PVGIS figures used above are the 2011 ones. I can't seem to find out which are the latest revisions, and which PVGIS figures I should be using. Perhaps someone can help me!)

    Cheers!

    Countryman,
A gas unit is roughly 31.3 electric units (kW/h), so 2.7 units is about 84kW/h.
My rule of thumb (last year) was that a unit of gas cost a pound. (If I've got that wrong I'm sure someone will put me right!)
