    Happy New Year everyone.

A very disappointing December, despite what I thought was pretty reasonable weather for the time of year, with only 82% of PVGIS. We had a lot of sunshine in the first half of the month but the pitch and orientation of the roof means it only strikes the panels a glancing blow. Realistically, here, November through to February can be considered a waste of time. Our average daily December production is only about one tenth of what me might expect in midsummer.

I know it’s not ben a bad December for some this year for but do others find historically PVGIS to be optimistic in the winter?

Grid consumption averaged 12.5 kwh per day for the last 3 months (October 7.4, November 13.2, December 16.9) compared to 19kwh/day annual average pre solar. Part of that is down to solar but a significant part also down to modified usage of the on/off switch. We generated 608 kwh and ‘saved’ 598 kwh last quarter. (Average daily solar figures were Oct 11.2, Nov 4.7 and Dec 3.1 kwh).

Because of the IBoost we use nearly all our solar PV from October onwards so it is fair to say that adding grid consumption to solar PV produces fairly realistic and consistent average daily total consumption figures for the 3 months of 18.6, 17.9 and 20.0 kwh. (Three days over Christmas with an electric cooker produced a December spike.)

My target for 2019 is to get our annual daily average grid consumption below 10 kwh which would almost halve our grid usage.

My winter %'s are generally worse than summer %'s, but since I'm using PVGIS figures straight (no allowance for shading), I assume that the lower sun angle naturally increases the amount of shading at this time of the year.

Basically, I think my winter targets are too optimistic, but I enjoy seeing actual performance v's 'max' theoretical. Overall, I find PVGIS estimates pessimistic, but I suspect that's down to the 14% default losses, which hasn't changed this decade, despite rising inverter efficiencies, and I suspect it being a bit too high to start with.
