How do you monitor the output from your solar panels? My panels were installed in 2011, and at the time there were no monitoring systems available. I take daily readings from the generation meter, and that's all the information I have except for the red/green light on the Immersun that shows whether there is enough surplus solar energy to run the immersion heater.

I'd like to be able to monitor power generation and know when the house is importing power, preferably from my iPad or a web browser on my PC. Should I ask the electricity company to install a smart meter, or should I install my own monitoring system inside the house? I've been considering the Open Energy Monitor system, which has very customisable reports and can have extra sensors connected to monitor specific appliances, but at £200 for the basic system that might be overkill.

I use a Geo Solo II with an Internet bridge to keep an eye on things when away from the house. The monitor just counts red flashes on the generation meter so I would think it is compatible with any meter that flashes.

    Hawaii + 0.1 O's

The temperature kept production down to a peak of 2.84 kWh so very happy with total.

Tomorrow should see me passed 200 kWh. :j

Reg. for FIT Nov 2011. "It's not what you generate; it's how you use it that matters". One very clean Vauxhall Diesel Sri, £30.00 Road Tax: B)

Definition of 'O's = kWh/kWp (kWh = your daily & accurate Generation figure) (kWp = the rated output of your PV Panels).

My panels were also installed in 2011 - along with a Sunny Boy inverter which communicates with my computer (running the Sunny Explorer software) via Bluetooth. Don't most other inverters have a similar facility ?

My inverter is a Diehl AKO Platinum. There's an adaptor that enables it to be connected to a PC, but it doesn't support Bluetooth so I'd have to run a cable down from the loft.
  • A good 4.48 O's. Nearly caught up, at 96% now.
3.99KW SunEdison (14 * 285W), Solis inverter, iBoost, Herts, roughly SW facing
