Am considering having an immersun/iboost/similar installed.
Due to a change in family circumstances I'm no longer able to maximise usage of generation in the same way as I have done previously.
Am just beginning my research but would be grateful for any advice, tips, pros/cons of different devices etc
Thanks
Not sure if it would be a good idea to buy one of the appliances mentioned.
Retro fitting will probably cost more than if you had done a deal with your SPV install.
Probably would expect to pay £250 ish? including installation.
Unless you're out most of the day, the size of your system, (2.2kWp) would probably not have much to divert.
Have you checked how much generation you send back to the grid?
I pay 3p a kWh for Gas, so it may take a long time to break even......longer than your guarantee?
Unless you could make your own diverter as others on this board have:idea:
Edit: Will cost more than £250.00 inc installation costs.16 Sanyo Hit 250s.4kWp SMA 3.8kWp inverter. SW roof. 28° pitch. Minimal shade. Nov 2011 install. Hybrid car. Ripple Kirk Hill. N.E Lincs Coast.0 -

Only checked my 45 deg 2kWp SSW today and that made 2.3 O's, not seen a cloud all day. Good job really as er indoors had washer, dryer and dishwasher on ALL day. In fact the dryer is STILL going....2 kWp SEbE , 2kWp SSW & 2.5kWp NWbW.....in sunny North Derbyshire17.7kWh Givenergy battery added(for the power hungry kids)0

jackieblack,
Although I am a fan of my immerSUN, I agree in part with legoman, in particular about the size of your system and the potential to divert anything meaningful. What direction does your system face, i.e. when would you be putting most energy into the immersion? If south, or east of south then you may be heating the water only for it to cool down again before it is needed.
I base my savings on the leccy cost as the losses in my pipes between boiler and tank and back mean I need about 3 times more gas kWh to heat the water in summer than I do using the PV, so the leccy unit price is a better proxy for the actual savings. But that depends on so many factors, so you will need to look at those sorts of things.
I save about £70 to £80 of gas over the summer, based on analysing pre-immerSUN bills, and a tenner or perhaps twenty over the rest of the year pre-heating the water on days like today (2kWh pushed through the immerSUN today as well as dishwasher and washing machine going but then, my system is twice the size of yours, plus a bit more).
The immerSUN website gives you the retail price of about £350 I think. Fitting should not cost a lot as these things are only clever switches. Indeed, you could just plug it into a normal socket and use it to drive a radiator. The senor clamp part is wireless these days, so again, not difficult to install.
I would suggest doing some maths - look at old gas bills for May to September and estimate how much of that you might save with a diverter, then cost up the install and decide whether the ROI fits your needs...

Just looked at my gas consumption costs from 1st April '15 - 31 Oct '15 = £86.53; 1st November '14 - 31st March '15 = £268.59 ex. standing charges. Most of that being H/W use with a very small amount of gas hob use. I have no immersion facility. I see that the iBoost is on Amazon for £249.99. so I think it is worth doing considering despite pay back will be a bit longer, but gas prices are likely (surely) will rise. I am actually considering getting an immersion heater fitted...Okay, look at ROI: we all took a bit of a gamble in our own circumstances (at the time) with PV; your gamble is, you spend £250 of savings on say, an iBoost; even if you save £12.50 a year on gas you are getting 5% back, better than leaving it in a Bank (on less interest). If you need to borrow the £250, then that's another story... HTH...2.5 kWp PV system, SSW facing, 45 Deg Roof. ABB Inverter, Monitor: 'Wattson'.
