It seems a bit strange, but if etiquette dictates that a poster is thanked if you read their post, then that's what I'll do.

I see it as being similar to the "like" button on Facebook.

Example. Sky News post a story that an airliner has crashed into the Indian Ocean. People "like" that post. They don't like that the airliner has crashed! It's just a way of acknowledging someone's input into an online discussion. Afterall, what would the forum be if people didn't make the effort to post?

I've just realised too that I won at the O's yesterday.

I'd just like to thank Fronius, the Installers and the Sun Gods for making this possible.

How do you remove a "thanks" having given it? :)

If you look at the line where it says "The Following User(s) Say(s) Thank You to (whoever) For This Useful Post:" you'll find that if you have already thanked somebody there will be a place to click saying "remove your thanks".

N.B. the wording is definitely "For This Useful Post:" and not "for bothering to post something". Having read that, I make a point of using the button sparingly so that anyone who receives my thanks realises that I really mean it rather than just clicking on everything that appears.
