Problems with Netgear DG834G router - dropping connection/not working/msn woe

Have got a Netgear DG834G router, and am having intermitant problems with it.
When the computer it is connected to by ethernet cable is off, i unplug the router too.
Some mornings when I boot up, there is no internet connection and I have to run the setup software again (and occassionally again, if setup doesnt detect my tiscali settings first time).
Also, msn messenger keeps disconnecting (which i'm presuming is the router dropping the connection briefly). Sometimes I don't receive messages that are sent to me on msn messenger (although it appears to the sender that i have received them).
I am using XP and have Windows firewall enabled and AVG antivirus.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When your having a problem with msn try the following..
Start > Run > cmd
Then in the command prompt type:
ping https://www.google.com -t
It will send continous pings to google. Press CTRL + Z to stop it...
If the pings are successful it shows your internet connection is working fine so when msn drops out you can use that to make sure you know exactly what the problem is.
Have you tried upgrading the firmware on the router? Go on the netgear site and search for your model in the support/downloads section. It may be a bug that can be fixed...
also make sure you have no "disconnect on idle" boxes enabled and so the internet is "always connected" as such.
Also before you try the firmware upgrade do a complete reset of the router by holding down the button under the router with a safety pin or something small! If you can't find the button look at the manual for the master reset button. If your still getting drop try the firmware upgrade.
Hope some of that helps! I have the same router and had a bit of a problem when I first got it. Kept dropping out. I think it was the router overheating actually so make sure its got a lot of air around it![FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

you might want to use the backup settings option before going down any reset the router route
You shouldn't have to run any setup software, just go to 192.168.0.1 with a wired connection.
and make sure your PC is set to always connect to your router when in range
