Just to advise everyone who helped me, my son has received a letter from PC World advising "PC World places a high value on providing excellent standards of customer service so it is always disappointing to receive correspondence from customers who feel that this has not been achieved. ... PC World do not operate a change of mind policy ... however I appreciate that you had no way of knowing the earphones would not fit without trying them out ..."

The outcome is that they have advised my son they have raised a cheque for £40 and this will be sent under separate cover within the next 7 to 14 days.

My son eagerly awaits the cheque to replace the headphones. Success!

Glad to hear that it looks like being sorted. Hope the cheque does materialise!

Pity they referred to a "change of mind" policy - it was not a change of mind taht forced the return. but you won out all the same - well done!

Good work! The way they acted clearly wasn't customer focused. I wouldn't use PC World personally simply because they seem pretty overpriced on many things and a bit of shopping around can save £s.

Congrats on getting it sorted (assuming the promised cheque actually turns up).

Although their customer services squirmed around and quoted various policies to make it sound like they were doing you a favor they were probably just following the company line. The disappointing thing is, if you had encountered a more customer service minded member of staff/management in the store it wouldn't have caused you this much pain to get it sorted out.

Unfortunately with many of these big retail chains you may or may not get a knowledgeable/helpful/understanding/etc person handling your sale/enquiry.
