  • Does anyone know if it is possible to "mix and match" fees at the dentist? I was unaware that my dentist is treating me as a private patient. Consequently, following my recent check-up, I need a pile of work done - nearly £800-worth. Ok, I am a nervous patient and get i/v sedation and am willing to pay for this and the white fillings I have insisted upon; however, the dentist is also charging me private fee for two extractions, check-up, and scale and polish (all of which are available on nhs). I have asked them to reconsider but they have refused. Just wondering about others' experiences?

Rules can be subtley different in each nation of the UK, but I believe it is allowed to charge privately for sedation and do the 'dentistry' on the NHS.

BUT - it is also up to the dentist.

So long as they have clearly told you that the work is private, then they have no obligation to provide NHS treatment.

What would be naughty would be not to tell you the work was being done privately, or to accept you as an NHS patient by doing an NHS examination, and then telling you that treatment necessary could only be provided privately.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I have to remind the dentist that if he does not knock me out, I will end up knocking him out. I am terrified of dentists and whenever they go to prod around, my instinctive reflexes inevitably kick in.

Section 4 of the public order act makes this a criminal offence. Good luck in finding someone who wants to treat you.

The treatments may be available on the NHS but your dentist does not have to provide them on the NHS unless you signed a blue form?
