will lloyds tsb budge on account refusal??

desperate to get shot of Halifax after their terrible service, i took some advice from this site and applied for a Lloyds TSB classic account

they knocked me back which doesnt suprise me, offering a basic account instead

with their basic account u get a cashcard which can only be used in Lloyds TSB machines - no use to me whatsoever

i have written to them explaining the genuine reasons for past financial difficulties and that my income is now to increase etc etc

have said that whilst i appreciate not being offered a cheque guarantee card, i understand that they have an Electron card, which is what I currently have with my existing bank etc
and have asked if i can have an account with one of these cards...

any ideas on whether they will budge on this?

  • If there is adverse information on your credit file then it is a definite no-no.

If you can get an electron card out of them i'd say you *might* get a cheque card after a certain period. You'd have to ask them if they would over look any negative information on your credit file if you have good account behaviour after 3 or 6 months.

I think Lloyds would usually upgrade after 3 months, but if you have adverse information then I don't know what happens.

    thanks v quick replies

but surely if i didnt have adverse credit - i would get an all dancing current account?

so i presumed perhaps the people with poor credit rating would get the pitiful electron cards?

whilst i would love a proper debit card, i dont think there is any chance of getting one of those for a while

but i just thought if i could match what i have already and get away from the dreaded halifax...

Even if you don't have negative information in your credit file, things such as having no previous information on your credit file, young age, low income/benefits, if you don't have a home phone number, number of dependents. etc... I could go on, are all not likely to score you highly when they calculate a credit score for how much of a risk they consider you to be as a potential customer.

So in short, having no negative information doesn't automatically entitle you to a full all-dancing bank account. All banks are different, all score differently. If you have no negative information, chances are some banks would give you a full account right away, whereas others wouldn't.

I have an account with Lloyds TSB and always ensure that they never get any charges out of me, such as from going overdrawn or having one of those stupid accounts where you pay a certain amount a month for things you never use or need.

It might be an idea to look at another bank - the only reason I'm still with them is because I am too lazy to change and have banked with them since the age of about 10, so about 14 years.

There are better banks out there than Lloyds TSB.

Go to Natwest, run the account like an angel for 6 months and then they score internally for upgrades.

Someone after my own heart but are you making the most of your account with Lloyds? If you pay in £1k or more per month are you on a plus account? This currently pays 4% gross not bad for an account if you are too lazy to transfer somewhere else.

    ta v much

i will giv natwest a try WHEN my rejection letter arrives from lloyds

need to get away from halifax asap
  • In my experience Lloyds TSB are very difficult to deal with. Very unusual for them to budge. A friend of mine who actually works in banking says that LLoydsTsb is one of the worse banks you can bank with but i'm sure that many others will probably dissagree with that statement :o I've just recently just kicked them into touch and moved to Nationwide who i have to say in comparisson bend over backwards and less charges :o

got phone call from a nice lady at Lloyds TSB today

she said unfortunately they cannot overturn decisions, but if i used the basic account for 2 months she would try and upgrade it if all was in order

i said thanks but no thanks as i cannot get to a Lloyds TSB cashpoint very easily

but i popped into Natwest to open a step account, and they guy said that judging from my salary i should be able to get a proper account

i explained my bad credit record and he said that my income and being a homeowner will score quite high?
he said if i dont get one straight away i will get a solo and prob be upgraded within a few months...

    am keeping fingers crossed

    thanks for the advice everyone
